Dear John

February 12, 2010

In this pre-Valentines Day week, there is a natural urge to watch sappy romance movies… Okay, maybe I am the only one that has this urge but it is very real just the same.

According to estimates, Dear John made $32.4 million in its opening weekend (i.e. between 2/5 and 2/7). In case you haven’t seen the ads for this movie, here is the trailer:

Could this be the perfect prescription for my hankering to watch a sappy movie? This is a very important decision that must be weighed carefully…

Pros:

Cons:

  • A Walk to Remember (another famous Nicholas Sparks novel turned into a movie) left me emotionally drained and VERY SAD.

I just can’t decide… Is Dear John as heart wrenching as it looks? I am a lover of great love stories; however, I don’t want to sob without the promise of an upside at the end.

I need your help! If anyone has seen it, let me know what you think. Will the emotional roller coaster lead to happy tears at the end? Let me know!

Valentine’s Day by Amy Atlas

February 11, 2010

For those of you unfamiliar with the brilliance that is Amy Atlas, you haven’t lived!… Okay, that is a little extreme. But only a little. Amy Atlas is the epitome of things that I love: parties, treats, color, and creativity. Just for some background, here are a few of my favorite Amy Atlas dessert tables:

The Little Black Book Blog recently featured Amy Atlas’ Valentine’s Day dessert table. Look at the beauty:

I just love how the frosting makes each cupcake look like a pink carnation. It is just so adorable. In my opinion, this is exactly what a cupcake should look like.

Just adorable! I hope that someday I have the pleasure of seeing an Amy Atlas dessert table in person. But beware, I will probably be star struck and knock over the entire display. Hopefully I will take a photo of the cuteness first 🙂

Valentines Paper Crafts

February 11, 2010

So, I just found a new obsession. It is called Paper Crave and it is a blog totally devoted to gorgeous paper products and crafts. LOVE IT! As a little introduction, check out their Valentine’s Day roundup:

Printable Bag Templates

Not only is this a gorgeous idea, but Paper Crave gives you the resources to make these dreams into reality.  Twig and Thistle, the blog that Paper Crave references in their roundup, provided the template for the brown bag and the white bag. Basically, all you have to do is buy the paper bags, stick them in a color printer, and use the template to print out the adorable bags. So cute!

Poster

For my fellow Love Actually fans, I know you will appreciate the “Love Actually Is All Around” poster as much as I do. Well, dreams do come true and you can download this poster here.

Book Wreath

Last but not least, check out the adorable book wreath. Flower Patch Farm Girl made it out of TONS of punched out hearts attached to a wreath base. As a die-hard romantic that loves novels, this simply makes my heart go pitter-patter. So great!

Where to get lucky this Valentines Day

February 10, 2010

Finding the right person has a lot to do with being in the right place at the right time. Case-in-point, I met my fiance in a “Introduction to Logic” course at Vanderbilt… Romantic! Who knew that I would meet my soul mate while solving logic-based math problems and trying to not fall asleep while our professor gushed about his dog…

I digress. One of my favorite sites, The Daily Beast, did a study of the best places to find a mate. They rated tons of cities on the following criteria:

  • Singles Ratio
  • Social Life
  • Emotional Health
  • Marriage Ratio
  • Divorce Ratio

You should click over to see the whole list, but I will tell you up front that I was really surprised by the findings. California and Texas pretty much DOMINATED the list. Nashville was #59–not too bad. Chicago, my current homeland, was ranked #80, smack dab between Buffalo, NY (#79) and Fort Wayne, IN (#81)… You will have to check it out yourself for more!

Valentines for Kids

February 9, 2010

Sometimes, making recipes or crafts meant for kids is way more fun than doing the ones meant for adults. In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, here are a few more Martha crafts meant just for kids…. Or for those of us that still exercise our inner child!
